The essence of the Mount Maunganui Fire Station design lies in its ultimate simplicity.
This design challenge involved a strict budget, severe height restrictions, and exacting operational requirements. The design response was to accommodate the required facilities within a highly efficient 2-storey box arrangement.
The ‘box’ is articulated externally with weatherboard and plaster in keeping with the nearby residential uses. Local Hinuera stone is also used for accent in selected areas.
Earthy colour tones have been employed throughout – in stark contrast to traditional fire stations – with the exception of a single bright red ‘blade’ to signify the building entrance.
Internally the building is largely utilitarian in nature, in response to the nature of the activity. However, generous spaces and a relatively high quality of accommodation has been achieved.
Thanks to the collaborative efforts of the client/architect/builder team, the project was delivered below budget, setting a new benchmark for quality and value in new local fire stations.
